Junk plastic vs. Good plastic

text and drawing by Frits Ahlefeldt

There are many kinds of plastic and some of them are high quality and others are the opposite, or directly harmful. Thinking about it I realize we actually talk about food in many of the same ways

When eating we can choose to eat and prepare meals of healthy, clean, fresh and sustainable ingredients. We can use things we a low impact on the planet and things that we have cared for and value… or we can eat cheap junk food, filled with low quality fillings, artificial colors, and food that is made in ways that are harmful both to us and to the environment

Understanding more about plastic, I have come to wonder if there are certain things about food and plastic that are easy to compare. In the heath industry and in medicine plastic is used in high end ways. in small amounts and to do good. – At the other end of the industry plastic is used more or less in opposite ways.

Maybe plastic and food can be compared – maybe like there are junk food, there are junk plastic. And maybe we can find ways to create and use plastic like materials – that can be good for both us and the environment. Making them biodegradable, using less and making sure what we make will last long and be possible to re-use or recycle
